An Affirming Environment

If I had my own Family Child Care Home, I would make sure that all families feel welcome. First, I liked the idea that Adriana greeted the children and their families outside of the home. Many child care centers and homes that I have been to do not greet their children outside. By using this idea in my setting, I believe the families will feel welcome, wanted, and appreciated. In addition, I also liked how Adriana used a poster of the families titled, "Our Family Community," (Laureate Education, Inc., 2011). The children will feel comfortable if they saw images of their loved ones in the home. I think this will really help the children transition as they leave their families and will also show them pictures of other families.

I will also create personalized books of the children and their families. Books can focus on a theme ('We All Have Families: Our Families are different," (Derman-Sparks and Edwards, 2010, p. 45). I believe this will grasp the children's attention as they will discover images of themselves and their families inside of a book. I will make sure that the books are very colorful because it amazes young children.

  1. Hi Latasha,

I enjoyed your post. I think the things you would add to your facility would be great for young children. I enjoyed many of the things from Adriana Castillo's facility too. Thanks for sharing.

  2. HI Latasha,
Good post! I observed several things from the media segment that featured Adriana. I also liked the fact that she greets her families outside. That was very unique. Creating personalized books sounds like a great idea. It might be something that I would also incorporate in my home child care center. Thanks for sharing these great ideas!

  3. Hi Latasha,
I think you are off to a great start on creating a family child care home. I never really thought about greeting the families outside of the home, but that can be a wonderful way to start and end each day. I also think it is a wonderful idea to incorporate the family community chart, especially for a newer child. This poster may help them get used to the child care home more quickly if they can see a picture of their family member. The family book is also a great way to highlight diversity and be able to incorporate it into the child care setting.

  4. Hi Latasha,
I also thought that that was a great idea to greet the parents and children personally. I know that as a parent that means alot when the staff takes the extra effort to ensure that the children and families have a warm welcome. It can be scary to leave your child with someone at their own home because their environment is more intimate than a child care setting. The family child care setting that is warm and inviting helps takes away the doubts of foul play.

  5. Hi Latasha,
I have a family child care home. My program is on the second floor. I have a welcome sign with all of the children's pictures and my own around it. Something like the sign on your post. Even though I am not able to greet most of the children when they first come into the family child care program. I think that is a wonderful idea. One child I do greet and it makes a world of difference in his day. Thanks for sharing
